Online role-play of the Master/slave kind.
A very nice paper which I had the pleasure of pre-reading and commenting last year, on Gorean role-play in Second Life, is now online. It was written by Tjarda Sixma, and published in Journal of Virtual Worlds Research, 1(3). Here is a link. It's of particular interest to people who are interested in seeing a rather different sort of online BDSM-type dynamic.

That was interesting read. A bit superficial, though. I guess it's understandable and all.

Thanks for the link, I guess I'll undoubtedly refer to this sooner or later. But I agree with previous commenter: it was a bit superficial. Also, I would have appreciated much less political correctness when discussing the (politically incorrect) behavior that (probably) takes place in that community.

I agree on your views on the depth. However, the way I see it, it's meant to be an easily approached, introductory ethnographic piece. Of the "this sort of phenomenon exists" kind. To go deeper - on either the political incorrectness or the nature of the play that takes place there - the whole approach would have had to be quite different. As she states, she intentionally chose this way, and thus announces the limit herself. It's a paper to build further research upon, an arousal of interest rather than a full description.

Any description on this smaller than a book like Mains' would, in my opinion, be "a bit superficial". :)
